Three Different Types Of Termites

Termites can seriously damage the structural integrity of a home, even your home in Midland, Texas, and once an infestation has taken hold, it is quite expensive to fix. In order to protect against termites, it is important to know what you are up against. In the United States, there are three different types of termites to take note of, as they are the ones that are particularly damaging to homes. Once you figure out what you are dealing with, you can take steps to mitigate the problem.

Drywood Termites

As their name implies, dry wood termites nestle in dry wood in your Midland home. Many people picture underground colonies when thinking about these little pests, but dry wood termites are different. They never touch the soil and they do not build the “mud tubes” that many people associate with termites. They draw water from the air, which is why they are often found in humid climates. However, because they can be transported via furniture, these termites can pop up in surprising locations.

Drywood termites are also commonly referred to as furniture termites or powder post termites. Localized treatments are sometimes effective because dry wood termites don’t always cause extensive damage. In order to prevent this pest, make sure to examine wood closely before using it for a project. Chemically treated wood is always a good option as well.

Subterranean Termites

These are the termites that strike fear in the hearts of homeowners. They have huge colonies that can cause a substantial amount of damage in a short period of time. Once they infest a structure, they are difficult to eradicate. They bury themselves down in the soil, and they construct the mud tubes that many people are so familiar with. These mud tubes allow them to travel easily from place to place. Subterranean termites eat all the time, and they are not incredibly discerning when it comes to their meal. Even paper is fair game. In order to protect against these little pests, make sure the area around your foundation stays as dry as possible. Keep your yard clutter-free, particularly with respect to wood or lumber.

Dampwood Termites

Unlike dry wood termites, damp wood termites like wet wood. They are commonly found in pieces that are touching the ground, and they also like decaying material. One of the issues with damp wood termites is that their colonies can number in the thousands, although they are often smaller than subterranean termite colonies. In addition, it is often hard to tell if you have them. With other types of termites, one outward sign of an infestation is the presence of droppings. However, damp wood termites use their droppings to close holes in the wood. They don’t build mud tubes, either. Therefore, you could have these pests for some time without realizing that they are there.

Getting rid of moisture is the best way to prevent an infestation or handle an existing one. Make sure to avoid using wood that has been damaged by moisture in any of your projects around the house.

How Do You Know If You Have Termites?

It is difficult to spot the signs of termites, particularly if you are not very familiar with them. Still, if you see mud tubes, bubbling paint, or blistering wood, you may have a problem. Piles of wings (from swarmers) and droppings that look like sawdust should also be something to take note of. If you have any concerns about possible termites, it is best to get in contact with a licensed pest control company as soon as possible.

Termites are not something that should be taken lightly. Educating yourself on the most common types of termites, including dry wood, subterranean and damp wood, can help you know what steps to take to handle an infestation. If you do think that you have a problem, get in touch with professionals so that it is handled quickly and efficiently.
