Things to Know

Bed Bug Dangers | The most dangerous thing a bed bug problem can cause is and allergic reaction from bed bug bites or from their droppings.

Many people live in terror about these critters crawling all over them at night, which is a legitimate fear. Just remember that mosquitoes, which many people can easily dismiss, are much more dangerous. Bed bugs don't carry any debilitating diseases, unlike mosquitoes, and they have no poison or sting.

Know your Bed Bugs | Some people have tried to fall asleep with the lights on because they think they'll be safe from a bite if they do. But bed bugs aren't vampires; they come out during the day or night, no matter if there's light or not.

Bed bugs can also be mistaken for small cockroaches, ticks, carpet beetles, or even spiders, so be sure of what you're facing before you take any action.

Bites aren't a good tool to diagnose an infestation because too many insect bites are identical, like mosquito bites or spider bites. Consult a pest professional if you're confused.

What's a Bed Bug?

It's not common to see one, but if you do, look for their oval shape, reddish-brown coloration, ribbed abdomens, six legs, and two antennae. They are usually no more than ¼ inch long, and when they're fed, they have a darker red color and a bloated balloon shape.

Bed bugs are "True Bugs," which is a common classification based on their number of legs, the presence of antennae, the shape of their mouthparts, and the number of segments in their body. Bed bugs probably originated from prehistoric bat caves where they fed on mammals there until early humans found residence there and transported the bed bugs with them.

This pest almost disappeared from the United States altogether during the middle of the previous century because of DDT used everywhere. Even though it was useful for a general pest management solution, DDT caused other problems as well. It poisoned children and families and caused problems for the planet.

Today, pest control companies are much more cautious about products and how they are applied. Visit the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA website for more information.

Look For Signs of Bed Bugs

1. Exoskeletons and Eggs

Young nymphs have to shed their exoskeleton five times before adulthood, and they need a blood meal before they can grow. Molts, discarded exoskeletons, might look like crumbs or light-colored bed bugs that look dead.

Eggs are less common to find because they're only 1 mm long, white or off-white, and are usually hidden, but they are possible to find.

2. Bed Bug Feces

You're most likely to find little black dots like black pepper in places bed bugs like to hide (see below for details). But keep in mind that cockroaches also leave molts and black feces behind, so when in doubt, contact a pest professional for help.

3. Stains on the Bed

Because they feed on humans, you might find bloodstains on your sheets that result from feeding. Bed bugs probe several places on the skin before they find the right one, so other spots on the skin might bleed before they close.

Just remember that bites alone aren't a good indicator of a bed bug infestation, but the presence of all three of these things are indicators of a bed bug problem.

Locate Bed Bug Hiding Spots

Common bed bug hiding spots include mattresses and box springs, the cracks and crevices in the floor, closets, around windows and window frames, bed frames, and under or around the bed.

Before you sleep in a hotel, motel or another place you visit, place your luggage in the bathroom or outside the room and inspect each of these places. If you find bed bug evidence, ask for another room or search for lodging at another location.

Bed bugs can spread from one place to another easily, usually by attaching to your clothes or luggage, so always be careful.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
